For Maruti Suzuki, it isn’t a difficult job to conceive a product that gels well with the masses in India. We’ve got many befitting examples, such as the Swift, Dzire and the Alto. However, there have been a couple of models which didn’t work as well as India’s largest carmaker would have hoped. One of them is the Ignis. With its compact dimensions, quirky looks and an expensive price list, the car could only manage to create a cult following.
Maruti Suzuki, however, isn’t ready to give up on the model in question just yet. It unveiled the refreshed Ignis, with a BS6-compliant (Bharat Stage 6) powertrain, at the Auto Expo earlier this month. And now, we’ve got the price list. The entry-level derivative costs Rs 4.89 lakh, whereas the fully-loaded automatic one carries a price tag of Rs 7.20 lakh. A simple variant-to-variant comparison reveals that in BS6 form, the Ignis costs Rs 6,000 more than it did before. Here’s the complete price list:
The Ignis facelift gets the same 1.2-litre petrol engine that also does duty in the Dzire, Swift and the Baleno. It produces 82bhp/113Nm and comes mated to a 5-speed manual as standard. Those who want a two-pedal setup can opt for variants equipped with an AMT (Automated Manual Transmission). Maruti Suzuki claims that no matter which engine-transmission one goes with, the Ignis can return a mileage of up to 20.89kmpl.
In terms of creature comforts, the Ignis doesn’t disappoint. As standard, the car comes with features like dual airbags, rear parking sensors, ISOFIX anchorages, ABS with EBD, front power windows, tilt-adjustable steering and headlamp leveller. On the other end of the scale, gizmos like a rear-view camera, rear wiper with washer, automatic climate control, push-button start/stop, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED-powered projector headlamps and DRLs, and 15-inch alloy wheels are on offer.
Maruti Suzuki is adamant that the Ignis is an “SUV”. That means it wants the revamped model to not only entice customers away from regular hatchbacks like the Swift or the Grand i10 Nios but also lock horns with some of the rugged-looking options such as the Freestyle. If you had to choose, what would be your choice?
