There’s no other way of putting it – Audi India is on a roll! It introduced two RS models – RS 7 Sportback and RS Q8 – in six weeks. And, by the end of September 2020 (probably!), it’ll land another new model – the Q2. The brand has dropped two teasers about this development – a 15-second video and a cropped image. Both suggest that India will get the compact SUV in pre-facelift form. Here, check out the video:

For most, it is difficult to tell whether that car is the refreshed one or the old version. So, you might say that there’s hope India will get the Q2 facelift, which broke cover earlier this month. However, the teaser image bursts that bubble completely. Here, check it out:

Although Audi has clarified that the image is for representational purpose only, it still doesn’t bring back hope for the refreshed Q2. Reason? Our theory says that Audi needs to test waters with the Q2 in India. That’s why, in all probability, it will bring the Q2 via the CBU route. And, because of the COVID-19 impact, there must have been unsold Q2 units in other markets. Those will be shipped to India. You have to say that as a business tactic, that’s brilliant. But then, all that is just a theory!

Another way of decoding those teasers is by focusing on finer details. For instance, the bumper shown in the video is from the pre-facelift model. Also, if Audi wanted to use a representational image for a teaser, why would it use the pre-facelift model? By now, we’re sure you’d be thinking that we’ve gone completely insane. Honestly, that’s not so important right now!

Like all BS6-compliant offerings we’ve got since January this year, Audi India will introduce the Q2 with a petrol-powered heart only. There’s still a question mark on which powerplant it will get. If we had to guess, Audi could offer the same engine-transmission combination as that one in the Skoda Karoq and the Volkswagen T-Roc. That means a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, with 148bhp/250Nm, mated to a 7-speed DSG.

On the features front, expect everything from dual-zone climate control, a digital instrument cluster and an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, to a rear-view camera, keyless entry and LED-powered headlamps and DRLs. The Q2 might also offer a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, onboard internet connectivity and a bunch of safety and assistance gizmos.

If our theory stands, the pre-facelift Q2 will have a competitive price tag even after attracting mahoosive import duties. Expect the price range to fall between Rs 35-40 lakh. If it comes at a higher price than that, why would people buy it over more practical offerings such as the BMW X1 and the Volvo XC40?
