The Indian automobile industry is going through a rough patch. In fact, it has witnessed a drop in sales numbers in each of the last eight months. Volvo Cars India, however, isn’t one of the many players frowning. Why? That’s because, during the first six months of 2019, the Indian arm of the Swedish carmaker has registered a growth of over 11 per cent.

We’re sure that math lovers would like to break out their calculators and confirm the claim. So, here’s what you need to know. From January to June this year, Volvo Cars India retailed a total of 1,159 units. Over the same period last year, the company sold 1,044 units. The company claims that a steady demand, especially for SUVs, from mini metros and tier-I towns helped in gaining the required momentum.

Here’s what Charles Frump, who is the managing director at Volvo Cars India, said in an official release:

We are extremely happy with 11% growth in sales performance so far especially when the industry is not looking positive. Our brand engagement programs continue to play a crucial role in this performance. While the short-term market performance looks tough, I am very confident the automobile growth will bounce back and we would be happy to replicate our sales performance of 2018.

Volvo Cars India currently sells two sedans – S60 and S90 – three SUVs – XC40, XC60 and the XC90 – and one estate – V90 Cross Country. The least expensive Volvo that money can buy in India is the S60 sedan in Momentum trim. Priced at Rs 38.5 lakh, it costs over Rs 17.5 lakh less than the Polestar variant and Rs 5.76 lakh less than the Cross Country trim. The company is expected to introduce the all-new S60 sedan and the refreshed XC90 in months to come
