In 2017, two Japanese carmakers, Toyota and Suzuki, shook on sharing vehicle platforms to sell in India and abroad. Well, the first offspring has emerged, albeit slightly. Toyota’s version of the Baleno will be called the Glanza. To give a glimpse of the end product, only a picture and a 12-second video have been unveiled. Here’s the video:
By the looks of it, the Toyota Glanza will share almost all the sheet metal with the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. Notice the alloy wheel design – it is identical to the one currently offered with the Maruti. The only difference is that Suzuki badge has been replaced with Toyota’s. The rest of the rear side profile looks exactly the same. Even the chrome-draped door handles have been lifted as is.
Of course, there will be some minor design changes to separate the two. Apart from a few Toyota badges and the variant nomenclature marque, the Glanza will feature a tweaked front fascia including a new grille design and slightly changed interior theme. The rest of the recipe, including the list of features and the powertrain options, will be shared with the Maruti Suzuki Baleno.
Under the hood, the Glanza will only be available with a 1.2-litre petrol engine. It will be the same engine that was recently upgraded by Maruti Suzuki to meet the stricter BSVI emission norms. In all likelihood, the specs are expected to stay the same as well. Like the Baleno, the Glanza will be available two transmission options – a 5-speed manual and a CVT (continuously variable transmission). There will be no diesel-powered Glanza on offer, which falls in line with Maruti Suzuki’s decision to stop selling diesel-fed cars from April 1, 2020.
The Toyota Glanza is expected to go on sale by the end of June this year. Post that, Toyota will introduce similarly tinkered iterations of the Vitara Brezza, Ciaz and the Ertiga. And just like the Glanza, they won’t have any diesel-fed derivatives.
