Up until now, the Fortuner had just one Legender variant – the 4×2 AT. Now, we’ve got another one – the 4×4 AT. Yes, it was on the cards for a while now, considering how well the Fortuner sells in its segment. The Legender 4×4 AT costs Rs 42.33 lakh, which means it becomes the first Fortuner derivative to jump over the Rs 40 lakh mark. Compare that figure with that of the Legender 4×2 AT, and the price difference is Rs 3.72 lakh.
The Legender comes with a turbocharged 2.8-litre diesel engine that produces 201bhp/500Nm. The job of harnessing all the oomph and feeding to the wheels is handled by a 6-speed automatic transmission. It’s the same setup that also does duty in the standard, diesel-powered Fortuner 4×4 AT. Unfortunately, Toyota still doesn’t offer the Legender version with a petrol engine or the option of a manual gearbox.
Courtesy of the 4×4 system, the Legender gets extra tech such as Downhill Assist Control and a lockable differential. Toyota has also equipped the Legender 4×4 AT with an 11-speaker JBL sound system. Besides those additions, the rest of the package is identical to the Legender 4×2 AT variant. The list includes a wireless mobile charger, ambient lighting, dual-tone upholstery, quad-LED headlamps with sequential turn indicators and a dual-tone paint job. Also, features like automatic climate control, cruise control, ventilated front seats and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system are available.
With the Ford Endeavour out of the picture entirely, Toyota’s Fortuner range now competes with the MG Gloster, Mahindra Alturas G4 and the Isuzu MU-X. However, taking only the Legender 4×4 AT’s price into consideration, which in some states will lead to a Rs 48 lakh+ on-road price, one can land SUVs from posher brands. The options include the Mini Countryman, Volvo XC40, BMW X1, Audi Q2 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA. So, would you spend that kind of money on a fully-loaded Legender? Or, would you seriously consider buying something from a luxury brand?
