Toyota Kirloskar Motor launched the Glanza hatchback in India yesterday. As expected, it is a perfect clone of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. In a few aspects, however, the Glanza actually comes out to a little to perfect over the Baleno. More on that in a bit. Prices for the Toyota Glanza start at Rs 7.22 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 8.90 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The Baleno’s deadly rival is available in just two trim levels, covering three engine-transmission combinations. Before we get to those details, let’s look at the complete introductory price list:
- 1.2L Mild-Hybrid G MT – Rs 7,21,900
- 1.2L V MT – Rs 7,58,200
- 1.2L G CVT – Rs 8,29,900
- 1.2L V CVT – Rs 8,90,200
Let’s get rid of the standard stuff first. As you’d expect, the engine-transmission combinations are lifted directly from the Baleno. Two engine options are available and both are BSVI-compliant 1.2-litre petrol units. The one with the mild-hybrid tag puts out 90PS and comes only with a 5-speed manual transmission, whereas the one without has 83PS and can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT unit. At 113Nm, the torque figure is identical in both engines. Mentioned below are the mileage figures:
- G MT – 23.87kmpl
- V MT – 21.01kmpl
- G CVT & V CVT – 19.56kmpl
Don’t go comparing those performance figures with those of the Baleno. They are identical. What’s not identical, however, is the standard warranty period. The Glanza outshines the Baleno’s 2 years/40,000km cover with a 3 years/1,00,000km cover. As far as colour options go, the Toyota Glanza is available in five – Café White, Sportin’ Red, Insta Blue, Gaming Grey and Enticing Silver.
With those details out of the way, let’s get cracking on the list of features that the Glanza gets in each of its two trim levels. As always, we’ll be focusing only on those gizmos which can potentially make or break a deal.
Trim – G | Variants: 1.2-litre mild-hybrid MT and 1.2-litre CVT
Here’s the list of features that the Glanza gets as standard:
LED projector headlamps | 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels | Dual airbags | ABS with EBD and BA | Front fog lamps | Rear wiper with washer and defogger | Auto IRVM | ISOFIX anchorages | Seatbelt reminder for front seats | Rear parking sensors | High speed warning | 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system | Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support | 6-speaker sound system | Voice command | Dual-tone fabric seats | Coloured MID | Push-button start/stop | Automatic climate control | 60:40 split rear seats | Electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs with Auto fold function.
As you can see, the G trim is quite loaded. In fact, it is on the same level of Baleno’s Zeta trim. If you want the Glanza with the most amount of power and the best fuel economy, this trim is the only option for you.
Trim – V | Variants available: 1.2-litre MT and 1.2-litre CVT
Given below are the features that the V trim gets over and above the G trim:
LED DRLs | UV protect glass | Rear-view camera | Auto headlamps | Follow-me-home/Lead-to-car headlamps | Rear combination lamps with light guide | Leather-wrapped steering wheel | Driver’s and co-driver’s sun visors with vanity mirror and lamp.
The price difference between the G MT and V MT variants is approximately Rs 36,000. However, that difference rises to about Rs 60,000 if you compare the G CVT and V CVT variants. In our books, the additional cost is a bit steep. We believe Toyota could have offered more services with the range-topping variants, if not features.
So, there you have it. Another product in the premium hatchback segment. Apart from rivalling the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the Glanza will also become a headache for the Volkswagen Polo, Honda Jazz and the Hyundai Elite i20.
