With petrol and diesel prices surrounded with uncertainty, cars with factory-fitted CNG kits are now more sought after than ever before. And to exploit that need, Tata Motors has launched CNG versions of the Tiago and Tigor. There are five such variants of the hatchback and three of the sub-compact sedan. Here’s the price list:

Now, if you compare any of those prices with their respective petrol-only counterparts, there will be a price difference of Rs 90,000. However, a new variant for the Tiago, XM, is available only with a bi-fuel setup. Also, the prices of all CNG variants are introductory in nature. In other words, those figures will go up soon.

As you’re aware, the Tiago and the Tigor house the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine that produces 85bhp/113Nm when fed with petrol. However, when CNG is used for propulsion, the power and torque figures drop to 72bhp/95Nm. And, the only transmission option available is a 5-speed manual. Tata Motors confirms that the ARAI-certified mileage is 26.49km/kg for both the CNG-fed models.

The automaker has taken the opportunity to update the list of features in the XZ+ trim level for the duo. The Tiago gets a new paint option – Midnight Plum – and a new interior theme – black-and-beige. Coming to the Tigor, it is now available in a new Magnetic Red shade, with or without a blacked-out roof. The sedan also gets new, single-tone alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlamps and a new dual-tone interior upholstery. The rest of the package remains unchanged.

Of course, the space has taken a massive hit with the CNG tanks in the luggage areas. The Tigor’s boot space has come down from 419 litres to 205 litres, whereas the Tiago has slipped from 242 litres to just 80 litres.

Rivals? Well, the Tiago CNG sits amongst a range of Maruti Suzukis – S-Presso, WagonR and Celerio – and the Hyundai Santro. The Tigor CNG, on the other hand, rivals the Hyundai Aura CNG. Soon, Maruti Suzuki will join the party with the Dzire CNG.
