Morris Garages has had a great start in India. The story began with the Hector which, even in a two-row format, did well to entice SUV lovers. Then came the ZS EV. The zero-emissions passenger vehicle is not only well priced but also offers more than adequate performance, as far as range is concerned. So, what next? The answer to that came to light at the Auto Expo 2020, where the British carmaker unveiled three new upcoming models – Hector Plus, Gloster and G10. And here’s what we know about them so far:
MG Hector Plus
As the name suggests, Hector Plus is not an entirely new model. In essence, it will help expand Hector’s portfolio. The Plus tag represents an extra row of seats. Courtesy of that, the Hector range will offer the option of a 5-, 6- and 7-seat layout. We already have the five-seat Hector. To make room for six people, the Hector Plus will come with captain seats in the second row. For those who want the maximum seating capacity will get the regular three-seater configuration in the middle row.
To ensure that the Hector Plus looks a bit different to the standard Hector, MG Motor India has injected some design tweaks on the outside. The front grille features all-black filling without the chrome border and flanking it are fatter LED DRLs. Even the front bumper is a bit different, and so are the fog- and head-lamp housings. At the rear, the set of changes include a restyled bumper, repositioning of reflectors and reverse light, and no light bar between the slightly different tail lamps. In terms of overall length, the Hector Plus measures 40mm more than the standard SUV.
As far as features and powertrain options are concerned, the Hector Plus will borrow them from the standard Hector. When will it launch? Expect that to happen in the second half of the year. As you’d expect, the Hector Plus variants will cost more than the Hector counterparts and compete primarily with the Mahindra XUV500.
MG Gloster
It is BIG! Measuring over five metres in length, more than 1.9 metres in width and nearly as much in height, the Gloster will take MG Motor India’s flagship crown. The three-row SUV is essentially a rebadged Maxus D90, which is on sale in China. However, it isn’t a complete copy-and-paste job for India. Compared to the D90, the Gloster gets a few styling tweaks for the grille, the tailgate, headlamp and tail lamp enclosures and the wheels. All-in-all, in terms of looks, the Gloster demands attention.
Because of its vast real estate, there’s ample room for a three-row layout indoors. MG Motor hasn’t confirmed any details about the India-spec Gloster yet. However, the model unveiled at the Auto Expo 2020 had a plethora of features. The list includes a massive panoramic roof, hands-free tailgate operation, three-zone climate control, heated and electrically operated ORVMs, ambient lighting, an 8.0-inch MID, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and the i-Smart Connected car tech.
In all probability, the MG Gloster will house the same 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine that comes from FCA and powers the Hector range as well. However, it will offer more kick. Power and torque figures should fall around 215bhp and 480Nm, respectively. And here comes the real kicker. MG Motor India will assemble the Gloster at its Halol plant. It will be interesting to see the amount of localised content that goes into the India-spec Gloster.
The Gloster should launch towards the end of 2020, sporting a starting price tag of about Rs 40 lakh. That means it will not rival the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour. Instead, it will become an enticing alternative to entry-level premium SUVs.
MG G10
Unlike the above two, the MG G10 is an MPV. With it, the company aims to enter the “luxury MPV” space in India. The G10, like the Gloster, comes from SAIC’s Maxus brand. In terms of dimensions, it is not only longer than the Gloster but also the Kia Carnival, its main rival. It seems the G10 will focus more on substance than styling. To behold, it doesn’t look especially ground-breaking with a traditional MPV-like silhouette.
Like the Carnival, the G10 will offer multiple seating layouts – seven, eight and nine. In terms of features, MG’s first MPV could offer electrically-adjustable second-row of seats, three-zone climate control, gesture-controlled tailgate operation, power-sliding rear doors, a panoramic sunroof, i-Smart-enabled touchscreen infotainment system and a bunch of safety gizmos.
MG Motor India hasn’t released the confirmed set of specifications for the G10. Depending on the market, the MPV is available with a 2.4-litre diesel engine, a 1.9-litre diesel mill and even a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol. To keep the costs in check, the MG G10 could get the same 2.0-litre diesel engine that does duty in the Hector range. And yes, expect the company to offer both manual and automatic transmissions.
The G10 could undercut the Carnival in terms of price. That means it will also give a fight to the Toyota Innova Crysta. Expect MG Motor India to launch the G10 either by 2020 end of early next year.
