The whole world is currently in a state of bother, courtesy of the Corona Virus pandemic. Countries have been promoting the concept of social distancing and implementing stringent lockdowns to ensure that the outbreak doesn’t get out of control. India is and has been in that list for days. And because of that, automakers haven’t been able to exhaust the inventory of BSIV (Bharat Stage IV) vehicles before the March 31, 2020 deadline. The Supreme Court of India swung into action to provide some relief to dealers a few days ago.
That said, carmakers have had their plans of action for the BS6 (Bharat Stage 6) era. A few won’t be selling any diesel-fed models at all, whereas the others decided to upgrade some diesel models, if not all, to meet the stricter emission norms. Falling in the latter segment is Honda. It categorically stated that it would continue to offer diesel-powered cars. But what has unfolded today is something worrying for diesel fans. Three models – the City, Civic and the CR-V – are no longer available with diesel engines. For the time being, at least, they march on as petrol-only models.
City
The 1.5-litre diesel engine, which has gained BS6 compliance in the Amaze, isn’t available now. It produced 98bhp/200Nm and came coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission. Don’t lose hope though as Honda is prepping the introduction of the all-new City later this year. That, in all probability, should bring back the options of diesel-fed variants. For now, the Honda City’s price list starts at Rs 9.91 lakh and goes up to Rs 14.31 lakh. The 1.5-litre petrol engine, which is available with a 5-speed manual and a CVT, has the same specifications and power/torque figures as before. The mileage numbers haven’t changed either.
Civic & CR-V
Honda launched the Civic in India just over a year ago, and the CR-V in October 2018. Both models were available with both petrol (1.8-litre in the Civic and 2.0-litre in the CR-V) and diesel (1.6-litre) engines. The common power-plant came with a 9-speed automatic transmission in the CR-V, and a 6-speed manual in the Civic. As for the power/torque figures, they stood at 118bhp/300Nm. Honda has taken away the diesel range for both these models. Specifications, power/torque numbers and mileage figures for the petrol engines remain unaltered. Here’s how their BS6 price lists look like:
Civic:
- V CVT: Rs 17.94 lakh
- VX CVT: Rs 19.45 lakh
- ZX CVT: Rs 21.25 lakh
Compared to the launch prices, the V variant costs Rs 24,000 more, whereas the other two get a price hike by Rs 25,000.
CR-V:
- 2.0 CVT: Rs 28.27 lakh (Rs 12,000 more than the launch price)
As expected, the Brio and BR-V nameplates are not available anymore. We know that Honda will launch the WR-V in BS6 form as well. Bookings for the subcompact SUV have already begun. That, like the Amaze, will have both petrol and diesel engine options. What about the Jazz? That will make a comeback soon in BS6 form as well.
