What you see here might look like an ordinary Tigor EV. One that has a maximum range of 142km (as per MIDC) and was only offered to fleet operators or for commercial use. But it is not. It is the Tigor EV Extended Range. While its name gives away the headline, there’s more to it. This version of the Tigor EV is available in three trim levels, XE+, XM+ and XT+, and prices start at Rs 9.44 lakh (after deducting Govt. subsidies). What’s more, apart from fleet operations, people can purchase this for personal use as well. For the latter, the price list starts at Rs 13.09 lakh.
With those highlights out of the way, it is time to quantify the “Extended Range” tag. Connected to a single electric motor is a 21.5 kWh battery pack, which is nearly 33 per cent bigger than the model before. Thanks to that, the range as per ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) is 213km. Simple math reveals that the latter figure is 71km more. In other words, the Tigor EV Extended Range offers 50 per cent more travelling distance on a single charge.
The electric motor produces 40hp/105Nm, all of which goes to the front wheels via a single-speed transmission. As far as the battery charging technology is concerned, the updated Tigor EV supports both AC and fast charging. The zero-emissions sedan also has two driving modes – Drive and Sport. However, Tata Motors has not bothered explaining the difference between them. The company is yet to reveal the complete price list and the trim-wise list of features. Features like dual airbags (one airbag in XE+), ABS, rear parking sensors and high-speed warning alert will be part of standard kit.
Tata Motors is also offering a warranty of three years/1,25,000 km. If you want to book one for yourself, you can do so either online or by going old-school and visiting the nearest authorised dealership. The minimum booking amount online is Rs 5,000. There is a catch here. The EV is currently available in only thirty cities in India. The list includes Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Patna, Ludhiana, Kolkata, Chennai and Ahmedabad.
With this updated Tigor EV, Tata Motors has joined an elite group of brands which offer pure-electric cars for personal use. The other two are Mahindra (eVerito) and Hyundai (Kona Electric). Within the first quarter of next year, India will get two more EVs – the MG ZS EV and the Ziptron-powered Tata Nexon EV.
