In December 2019, Honda introduced the petrol-powered, BS6-compliant (Bharat Stage 6) City. Now, it has launched the updated Amaze, which becomes the fourth Honda model to meet the stricter emission norms. The first was the petrol CR-V and the second was the petrol Civic. That means the subcompact sedan is the first to receive future-ready diesel-powered variants. The result of all the upgrades has led to an upward revision in prices: Here’s how they have changed:
Depending on the derivative chosen, customers will now pay between Rs 9,000 and Rs 51,000 more than before. For the record, there are no changes to the car’s list of features. If someone opts for the range-topping diesel-CVT variant, the price before taxes is almost Rs 10 lakh. Choose the optional Orchid White paint, and you’re there! In BS6 form, the Amaze is not as frugal as it was before. The claimed mileage figures for petrol-MT, petrol-CVT, diesel-MT and diesel-CVT are 18.6kmpl (0.9kmpl lower), 18.3kmpl (0.7kmpl lower), 24.7kmpl (3.1kmpl lower) and 21kmpl (no change).
As far as power and torque figures are concerned, they remain unchanged. The 1.2-litre petrol engine produces 89bhp/110Nm with both transmission options (5-speed MT and CVT), whereas the 1.5-litre diesel is available in two states of tune – 99bhp/200Nm (with 5-speed MT) and 79bhp/160Nm (with CVT). Till date, the Amaze remains the only offering in its segment to offer a diesel-CVT combination.
Since launching it in May 2018, Honda has bagged 1.3 lakh sales for the second-gen Amaze. If you rope-in the sales numbers of the first-gen model, the total goes up to 3.9 lakh sales. Later in the year, Honda will introduce the all-new City which broke cover in November last year. On the other hand, slow-moving models such as the BR-V, Jazz and the WR-V could face the axe and not enter the BS6 era.
