Homegrown automaker Tata Motors embarked on a journey of transformation when it launched the Tiago hatchback in April 2016. It was the first product from the company to flaunt the Impact design language. Now, less than three years from its day of introduction, the Tata Tiago has made its maker proud by breaching the 2-lakh sales mark.

The Tiago was always well priced and, more importantly, well equipped. To ensure that its charm doesn’t fade away over the years, Tata Motors kept on adding equipment, variants and special editions to the hatchback’s portfolio. The year 2017 saw the introduction of AMT (automated manual transmission) in the Tiago’s package. The two-pedal setup is available in two trims – XTA and XZA. The same year also saw the launch of the Tiago Wizz – a special edition with a bunch of cosmetic enhancements.

In 2018, Tata Motors launched two different iterations of the Tiago – the NRG and the JTP. While the former is a jacked-up Tiago with a rough-and-tough outlook, the latter claims the title of being the most powerful petrol-powered hatchback under the Rs 7 lakh mark. Later on, a new range-topping trim – the XZ+ – was added to the Tiago’s line-up. That trim saw the introduction of features such as a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, auto-folding OVRMs, automatic climate control and 15-inch alloy wheels.

The Tata Tiago is available with both petrol and diesel engines. While the former is a 1.2-litre mill that produces 85PS/114Nm, the latter is a 1.05-litre motor and pumps out 70PS/140Nm. Both engines can be had with a 5-speed manual transmission but only the petrol engine is available, as mentioned above, with a 5-speed AMT.

Tata Tiago Now Comes With ABS As Standard

Tata Motors is currently prepping the mid-life update of the Tiago. It is expected to launch in India by the end of this year. As far as the rivals are concerned, the Tiago locks horns with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio and the Datsun Go.
