Saar: They will bear the XMA and XZA badges at the back.

Earlier this month, Tata Motors launched the highly anticipated AMT variants of the Nexon SUV. Unfortunately, the two-pedal setup, or what Tata calls HyprDrive, is currently available only in top-spec XZ+ variants with both the petrol and diesel engines. While the petrol-powered XZA+ is priced at Rs 9.41 lakh (Rs 9.62 lakh with dual-tone paint), the diesel-fed XZA+ is available for Rs 10.39 lakh (Rs 10.59 lakh with dual-tone paint). Now though, thanks to guys at IAB, it is confirmed that more AMT-equipped variants of the Tata Nexon are on the way. They, as per the procured registration document, will bear the XMA and XZA badges.

Just to highlight something here, the press release for the Tata Nexon AMT launch, which came out on May 2, 2018, read Rs 10.3 lakh as the price for the XZA+ diesel. Only two explanations possible. One, Tata goofed up to print the press release properly or, two, in just a week’s time, the prices have shot up. We think it is the latter but since this was a mistake by the homegrown automaker, we wanted to highlight it.

Anyway, back to the Nexon. Needless to say which variants the XMA and XZA iterations will be based on. Yes, that’s XM and XZ respectively. In other words, the XMA and XZA will get the same kit inside and outside as their manual counterparts. That said, the PEPS smartkey is likely to be reserved for the top-spec XZA+ variants only. Other AMT-specific features like forward and reverse creep function and hill assist will be offered.

Noticed something strange? The registration document attached mentions only the 1.5-litre engine. Yes, that is strange but don’t worry as Tata Motors is likely to introduce the XMA and XZA variants with both engine options. On to the question of expected prices. Let’s look at the price difference between the manual and AMT variants currently available.

Tata Nexon Price Difference: AMT Vs Manual

VariantPrice - Manual TransmissionPrice - AMT (Variant)Approx Price Difference
XZ+ (Petrol)Rs 8.81 LakhRs 9.41 Lakh (XZA+)Rs 60,000
XZ+ (Diesel)Rs 9.69 LakhRs 10.39 Lakh (XZA+)Rs 70,000
XZ+ DT (Petrol)Rs 9.02 LakhRs 9.62 Lakh (XZA+ DT)Rs 60,000
XZ+ DT (Diesel)Rs 9.89 LakhRs 10.59 Lakh (XZA+ DT)Rs 70,000

The table above clears it out for us. Tata Motors is asking for approx Rs 60,000 and Rs 70,000 more for the AMT variants over and above the manual ones. If we take the prices of XM and XZ variants (petrol and diesel) of the Tata Nexon and bump them up by the same amount as equated above, here’s what we get:

Expected Prices: Tata Nexon XMA And XZA

VariantPrice - Manual TransmissionApprox Bump In PriceExpected Price - AMT (Variant)
XM (Petrol)Rs 6.91 LakhRs 60,000Rs 7.51 Lakh (XMA)
XM (Diesel)Rs 7.84 LakhRs 70,000Rs 8.54 Lakh (XMA)
XZ (Petrol)Rs 7.99 LakhRs 60,000Rs 8.59 Lakh (XZA)
XZ (Diesel)Rs 8.99 LakhRs 70,000Rs 9.69 Lakh (XZA)

Are you wondering what we are wondering too? What about the XT variant? Why has Tata skipped that? The only plausible reason behind is that Tata Motors wants to leave some scope to introduce more AMT variants at a later stage, based on the kind of response it gets from the XMA and XZA variants.

When will these new variants launch? Well, there is no news on that front. But don’t expect Tata Motors to wait too long as the introduction of the mid-range AMT variants will only garner more customers. We expect that the company will launch them around Diwali this year.

NOTE: All prices mentioned in this story are ex-showroom Delhi.
