Homegrown automaker Tata Motors has announced that its first and only sub-4 SUV, the Nexon, has reached a production milestone of 1 lakh units. The SUV, which is being built at the company’s Ranjangaon facility, achieved this feat in less than 22 months. The 50,000-production mark was breached in August last year. That’s the same month when Global NCAP first crash-tested the Nexon and gave it a four-star safety rating.
However, the rating was upgraded to five stars in December 2018, thanks to the addition of seatbelt reminders for both front occupants. Till date, the Nexon remains the only made- and conceived-in-India passenger vehicle to achieve five stars in safety rating. The Tata Nexon was launched in September 2017 and since then it has received technology and variant add-ons as well as a limited-edition derivative – the Kraz. Tata Motors claims that in the past 1 year, the Nexon has been the second most selling sub-4 metre SUV in India.
The Nexon is available with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel, both of which are currently BSIV-compliant. While the former is good for 110PS/170Nm, the latter produces 110PS/260Nm. Both engines can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed AMT. Last month, Tata Motors updated the Nexon’s recipe by giving it some aesthetic and feature upgrades.
Tata Motors will be upgrading both of Nexon’s engines to meet the stricter BSVI (Bharat Stage VI) emission norms. In fact, the only diesel engine which Tata Motors is unlikely to carry beyond March 31, 2020, is the 1.05-litre mill that powers the Tiago and the Tigor. In India, the Tata Nexon (Rs 6.58 – 11 lakh) competes with the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (Rs 7.68 – 10.65 lakh), Honda WR-V (Rs 8.08 – 10.48 lakh), Ford EcoSport (Rs 7.81 – 11.35 lakh), Hyundai Venue (Rs 6.5 – Rs 11.10 lakh) and the Mahindra XUV300 (Rs 8.10 – 12.69 lakh).
