Launched in October last year, the Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP were conceived jointly by Tata Motors and Cochin-based Jayem Automotives. Neither model has received the kind of traction that was originally anticipated. To enhance their charm a bit more and make them compliant with the new safety norms, Tata Motors has mildly updated their recipe. In that process, the automaker has also had to bump up the asking price for both models. The updated Tiago JTP and the Tigor JTP cost Rs 6.69 lakh and Rs 7.59 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), respectively.
So, what all changes have been included to justify the Rs 30,000 increase in the Tiago JTP’s asking price and Rs 10,000 hike in its sedan-shaped sibling? Both models now come with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. No points for guessing, it is the same unit that also does duty in top-spec Tiago and Tigor iterations. The added convenience of electrically foldable ORVMs has also been roped in. And, the Tiago JTP borrows the automatic climate control feature from its go-fast sibling.
On the safety front, the JTP twins now get seatbelt reminder for front passenger and a high-speed warning alert. Other gizmos such as rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, dual airbags, ABS with EBD & CSC (Corner Stability Control), rear wiper with washer and defogger, and speed-dependent auto door locks were already part of their kit.
As you’d expect, there are no mechanical changes to report. Both are powered by the same 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine which produces 112hp/150Nm, while transmission duties are handled by a 5-speed manual unit. The powertrain is still BSIV-compliant. It will have to be upgraded to meet the stricter BSVI norms if Tata Motors wants to retail both JTP models beyond March 31, 2020. It is only after that date is when we’ll get to see a JTP derivative of the Nexon as well. Before that happens, though, Tata Motors is expected to launch the mid-life update of its sub-4 metre SUV.
