Dubbed originally as the H7X and later gaining the Buzzard tag for last year’s Geneva International Motor Show appearance, the Gravitas is now production-ready. At the ongoing Auto Expo 2020, Tata Motors took the wraps off the model in question. Widely and correctly touted as the seven-seat version of the Harrier, Tata’s new flagship will launch during the first half of the next fiscal year.
So, let’s start with a simple question – has Tata Motors done anything to make the Gravitas look different from the Buzzard? On the outside, no. The Gravitas is pretty-much a carbon-copy of the Buzzard. What about the similarities with the Harrier? As you can see, there are a lot. From the front and up to the rear doors, both models look the same. The duo even shares the alloy wheels design and, of course, the platform. To accommodate an extra row of seats, which are accessible by flipping and folding the second row of seats, Tata Motors has changed the rear overhang. As a result, the tailgate is a bit more upright. Other differences include restyled tail lamps and the rear bumper.
The story of sharing will continue between the two siblings inside the cabin as well. That means the Gravitas will have the same set of features on offer as the Harrier. The list includes a panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming IRVM, power-adjustable driver’s seat, an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system mated to a 9-speaker JBL sound system, six airbags, a part-digital instrument cluster, Xenon HID projector headlamps, LED DRLs and automatic climate control.
Tata will also offer the Gravitas with the same, BS6-compliant (Bharat Stage 6) powertrain options as it does with the Harrier. That includes one engine – a 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel engine with 168bhp/350Nm – and two transmissions – a 6-speed manual and a Hyundai-sourced 6-speed automatic. With the extra weight, the Gravitas will not match the Harrier’s acceleration and top speed figures. However, it will balance the equation with more space for people.
