Tata Motors has extended its partnership with its sister concern, Tata Power, to set up 300 fast-charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) before the current fiscal year comes to close. These will be set up in five major cities in India – Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Out of the 300 promised, seven have already gone live in Pune. The duo also confirmed that over the next two months, 45 more will be up and running across the other four cities.
The charging stations will be located at Tata Motors dealerships, certain Tata Group retail outlets and other public locations. The stations will be operated by Tata Power and all will adhere to Bharat Standard (15kW) for the initial 50 chargers. As time passes, more powerful charging stations meeting 30-50kW DC CCS2 standards will be installed. The companies say that any compatible EV can be charged using these chargers. For EVs developed by Tata Motors, the duo will offer better rates of charging tariff.
In Mumbai, Tata Power currently has 42 charging points operational. Rope-in metros like Delhi, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, and that number goes up to 85. In the past, the company inked MoUs to set up commercial scaler EV charging stations at HPCL, IOCL and IGL retail outlets. In May last year, Tata Motors and Tata Power came together to sign an MoU with the Govt. of Maharashtra to install charging stations across the state and deploy 1,000 EVs across its range of passenger as well as commercial vehicles.
In June 2019, Tata Motors revealed the prices of the Tigor EV. However, those came down by Rs 80,000, thanks to a GST (Goods and Service Tax) cut from 12 per cent to 5 per cent. Presently, the homegrown automaker is working on four, longer-range EVs. Out of the four, one is the Altroz EV and the other is the Nexon EV. The company confirmed that all four will launch in the about 18 months.
