Saar: The central body has also appointed heads for these focused verticals.

India, as we know it, is far behind in the race to adopt electric mobility in all forms and factors. Partially that’s due to the fact that our country has woken up late to tackle the rising level of air pollution. But mainly that due to the fact that a focused approach in all automotive sectors has been missing to date. While the first part can be brushed off by saying ‘better late than never’, it is the second part that India needs to focus on. And that’s exactly what the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) has done.

The central body has formed five new verticals, each of which will be responsible for focusing on a given sector. The said verticals are:

  1. Heavy Commerical Vehicles
  2. Electric 3 Wheelers
  3. Electric 2 Wheelers
  4. Electric 4 Wheelers, and
  5. Component Drivetrain

To ensure an organised approach to honing each of the above-mentioned verticals, SMEV has also appointed heads to lead them. Sushant Nayak from Tata Motors will be leading the Heavy Commerical Vehicle segment, which will include e-buses and e-trucks, while Sulajja Firodia Motwani from Kinetic Green will assist the Electric 3 Wheelers segment, which includes E-rickshaw and L-5 auto e-karts. The third vertical of Electric 2 Wheelers will be headed by Manu Sharma from Hero Electric, which will include everything from e-cycles to high-speed scooters and bikes.

The Electric 4 Wheelers vertical will be lead by Pawan Sachdeva from Mahindra Electric and apart from cars, this category will also cover LCVs (Lightweight Commercial Vehicles). Guruprasad Pudlapur from Bosch will be spearheading the Component Drivetrain vertical, which will be covering areas such as charging infrastructure, and electrical and electronic components needed for electric vehicles (EV). The scope of EV batteries, however, has been kept out of that last vertical.

On this development, Sohinder Gill, director, SMEV, said:

“We are extremely happy to complete ten years of leading industry body representing electric mobility in nation. And on this occasion, we warmly welcome our new Category Heads who will be responsible for their respective segments. World is warming up to the EV revolution and India is no different. Being at the forefront of electric mobility, we at SMEV will continue to take India towards a sustainable tomorrow.”

SMEV says that each of the vertical heads will be responsible for conducting the required research and meetings on their respective category related projects. The central body says that these heads will also be promoting and encouraging other industry players to join SMEV and its quest of electrifying India. Currently, SMEV has over 40 members, covering vehicle and components manufacturers.
