Skoda Auto India has introduced a new, entry-level variant for its least expensive offering. Dubbed as the Rapid Rider, it is priced at Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom India). It is based on the Active petrol-manual variant and will be available for a limited time. If you compare the ex-showroom prices, the Rider undercuts the Active trim by Rs 1 lakh.

To set it apart, Skoda has applied some cosmetic trickery to the Rapid Rider. On the outside, it features a gloss black grille, black decals on the side and black trunk lip garnish. The cabin features dual-tone ebony sand interiors with ivory slate upholstery and scuff plates with ‘Rapid’ inscription. Skoda is offering the Rapid Rider in just two colours – Candy White and Carbon Steel.

As far as the list of features goes, it is exactly the same as the one applicable for Active trim. That means features like 15-inch steel rims with full wheel covers, dual airbags, ABS, rear parking sensors, double-din audio system with four speakers, rear AC vents and two 12-volt accessory outlets are part of the kit. However, features like a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, alloy wheels and the option for an automatic transmission are not on offer.

Under the bonnet of the Skoda Rapid Rider is the 1.6-litre petrol engine which is good for 105PS/153Nm. The power is sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission. As far as mileage is concerned, Skoda claims it can go up to 15.41kmpl. Last month, the company rolled out the 100,000th unit of the Rapid from its Chakan facility in Monte Carlo derivative.

With the introduction of the Rider variant, the Skoda Rapid becomes one of the most affordable sedans in India. Apart from competing with its step-sibling, the Volkswagen Vento, it rivals the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Toyota Yaris and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.
