Skoda Auto India has announced that its entry-level product, the Rapid, has achieved a production milestone. The C-segment sedan has breached the 1-lakh production mark in India. The variant that introduced the sixth digit was a Rapid Monte Carlo, finished in flash red colour. And it was produced at Volkswagen Group India’s Chakan facility, which is in close proximity to Pune.
Here’s what Zac Hollis, who is the director of sales, service and marketing at Skoda Auto India, said about this achievement in an official release:
The Rapid continues to offer a compelling combination of the brand’s emotive design, exquisite interiors, leading safety as well as intelligent connectivity features. The production milestone is a testament to its strong equity among discerning customers in a dynamically evolving automotive market like India. With this accomplishment, we commit a stronger product portfolio and enhanced ownership experience – ascertaining, peace of mind comes standard with a Škoda.
The Skoda Rapid is available with four engine-transmission combinations. The 1.6-litre petrol engine, which is good for 105PS/153Nm, can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The 1.5-litre diesel mill, on the other hand, produces 110PS/250Nm and is available with a 5-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG unit. Needless to say, it’s the diesel engine that is way more frugal than the petrol, returning up to 21.72kmpl.
All four powertrains, which are currently BSIV-compliant, are also available with the Rapid Monte Carlo. The said model was relaunched in India earlier this year. It is currently priced between Rs 11.40 lakh and Rs 14.26 lakh (ex-showroom India). In India, the Skoda Rapid competes with Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Toyota Yaris and its step-sibling, the Volkswagen Vento.
Under India 2.0 project, Skoda Auto will be leading the way for Volkswagen Group on our shores. With a number of highly localised products in the pipeline, most of which will be underpinned by the MQB-A0-IN platform, the German automotive giant is eyeing to turn around its fortunes in India. The first product prototype, which will become a Creta-rivalling Skoda SUV, will be shown to the public at next year’s Auto Expo.
