Start practising. E…NI…YAAK. Or EN…YUK. Enyaq. Honestly, those are guesses. Skoda could easily say something like the E is silent or don’t stress too much on the Q. How would you pronounce it? Before you come up with your version of pronunciation, it is better to know why Skoda has named its first, all-electric SUV… that!

There is a theory. And that too a believable one. We’re well versed about Skoda’s love for the letter Q. We’ve seen evidence in all three, conventionally-powered SUVs – Kamiq, Karoq and Kodiaq. With a place reserved for the letter Q, the leftover word is Enya. That is an Irish name, which translates to ‘source of life’. Dig a bit deeper, and one could trace its roots to the Irish Gaelic word ‘Eithne’, meaning ‘essence’, ‘spirit’ or ‘principle’. Skoda says that the name Enya symbolises its entry into the new era of electromobility.

You have to agree that story does join the dots… somewhere! Enyaq will become Skoda’s first series-production vehicle with Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electrification Toolkit (MEB) as the platform. The same architecture will also form the root of more than ten electric models that will launch under the Skoda iV sub-brand by the end of 2022. By 2025, Skoda wants pure-electric and plug-in hybrid models account for 25 per cent of the total sales. To achieve such numbers, it will have invested two billion euros in the development of not only electric vehicles but also their support infrastructure by 2021.

The Enyaq is not the first Skoda to feature an all-electric powertrain. The Citigo^e iV claims that title. That said, the e-SUV will cater to a broader audience. Presently, it’s unclear when the Enyaq will enter production. But considering how Skoda runs its marketing activities, more information about the EV will surface bit by bit in the coming months.
