It seems Renault doesn’t want to leave any stone unturned to enhance the charm of its bestselling product in India – the Kwid. The pocket-friendly hatchback now comes with more features in its package at no extra cost. For starters, the RXT and Climber iterations of the Kwid now feature a new 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system which supports smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The new system also brings in additional features like voice recognition and video playback via USB. It is, in fact, the same infotainment system which has also been fitted to the Renault Duster.
However, the biggest change in the Kwid’s portfolio is its enhanced list of standard features. No matter which trim you choose, it will come with a driver’s side airbag, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), speed alert warning system and seatbelt reminder for the driver and the front passenger. If crash-tested again, the aforementioned safety features should help the Kwid get a better overall rating.
As before, the Renault Kwid is available with two petrol engines – a 0.8-litre, 3-cylinder with 54PS/72Nm on tap and a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder which produces 68PS/91Nm. While both are available with a 5-speed manual transmission, only the latter can be had with an AMT (automated manual transmission).
Renault introduced a standard warranty package of 4 years/1,00,000km for the Kwid last year. Some of the other design features of the Kwid which attract entry-level car buyers in India include a high ground clearance of 180mm, good ride quality and big luggage space of 300 litres. In India, the Kwid competes with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Alto (800 and K10) and the soon-to-be-axed Hyundai Eon.
