The electric vehicle (EV) scene in India is in a nascent stage, especially in the personal mobility domain. Presently, only two such vehicles are available for personal use – the Mahindra eVerito and the Hyundai Kona Electric. There’s the Tata Tigor EV but it is still available only for commercial use. Players such as Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Kirloskar Motor are also working on bringing their versions of EVs to India. Unsurprisingly, Renault will also be joining that bandwagon but not before 2022.

At the launch event of the Triber, Renault India’s head honcho Venkatram Mamillapalle confirmed that the EV plans are on. But the company’s first EV won’t come into the market before 2022. The primary reason behind this delay is the lack of supporting infrastructure. He gave an example of how an electric vehicle, in the current scenario, cannot do a Mumbai to Delhi run. He further added that the government must work to develop a robust ecosystem. And it probably is. Once that is in place, only then it makes sense to introduce EVs in India.

It is difficult to say when Maruti Suzuki and Toyota will bring their EVs to India. However, we will be getting a new EV by December this year. Called the MG eZS, it will be locally put together and become the company’s second product offering in India after Hector. Audi is readying the entry of e-tron in India as well. What’s more, pure-electric versions of the Mahindra XUV300, Mahindra KUV100 and the Tata Nexon are also in the pipeline. Mahindra will also be helping Ford India to introduce an all-electric Aspire in 2021.

In a bid to push for EV adoption in India, the government recently slashed GST (Goods and Services Tax) on such vehicles from 12 per cent to 5 per cent. We’ve also seen state-run EESL (Energy Efficiency Services Limited) joining forces to install EV charging stations with city authorities, such Noida Authority, as well as private players, like Apollo Hospitals. The company also inked an MoU with MahaMetro to do the same in Nagpur.
