Saar: It brings the ‘luxury of privacy’ from the regular folks in the front.
We are pretty sure that you would have seen something like this on limousines – a privacy glass that slides upwards towards the ceiling and gives the passengers behind the front two seats a place for their private business. Well, you can now get the same feeling inside the Extended Wheelbase (EWB) iteration of the Rolls-Royce Phantom. The BMW-owned British marque has introduced an add-on called the ‘Privacy Suite’. In pure Rolls-Royce words, the optional extra brings the ‘luxury of privacy’ for those who demand it.
So, how does it work? The two sections, front and rear, are visually separated with a massive Electrochromatic Glass. Now, this glass panel can be risen or taken down by a touch of a button. That doesn’t sound groundbreakingly brilliant. But, what is brilliant is that the rear passenger can either choose to keep the glass transparent or make it opaque, thanks to the electrochromatic wizardry. Nice!
But, the ‘Privacy Suite’ has more. To ensure that the conversation from the rear section is secure and can’t be heard in the front, a frequency-specific compound inhibits that transmission. This was, of course, needed because the Rolls-Royce Phantom has one of the quietest cabins of all cars currently on sale today. So, what if during the business talks the rear passengers want to talk to the passengers in the front? For that, Rolls-Royce has fitted an Intercom System. Very nice!
It’s still not over! A large aperture, which is controllable only by the rear passengers, allows documents or other objects to be exchanged between the two visually split spaces. To enhance the security and safety factor, the aperture remains discretely illuminated so that passengers are satisfied with the nature of the documents or objects before they take them.
To pamper the rear passengers further, the add-on package brings two high-def 12.0-inch monitors which are linked to the Phantom’s suite of fully connected software. They can also take a feed from HDMI ports for the passengers to enjoy watching whatever they want to. Rolls-Royce has also added rear privacy curtains as part of the add-on package. They fully cover the side and rear windows as well as rear privacy glass, extending privacy when the curtains are open.
Rolls-Royce introduced the ‘Privacy Suite’ for the Phantom EWB at the ongoing 2018 Chengdu Motor Show. The uber-luxury marque is yet to announce the pricing. Expected it cost, at least if not more, around the same as a premium hatchback.
