Ever since Porsche introduced the Taycan, the car has bagged several prestigious awards. If you want the count, it is around 40. The list includes Car of the Year, and, Game Changer of the Year from BBC Topgear Magazine, German Car of the Year and the World Car of the Year 2020 in both World Performance Car and World Luxury Car categories. That is quite a resume for a car that has yet to complete a year in the market.
Earlier this month, Porsche’s first-ever EV placed another feather in its cap. The Center of Automotive Management (CAM) recognised Taycan as the most important innovation driver in the new AutomotiveINNOVATIONS report. In Porsche’s words, the zero-emissions vehicle is the most innovative car in the world. For the record, CAM is an independent scientific institute for strategic consulting and empirical automotive and mobility research. It works out of the University of Applied Sciences (FHDW), located in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. CAM has been studying innovations from all over the world since 2005. For 2019/20, it analysed nearly 250 production vehicles.
CAM recognised a total of 27 new developments in Taycan, 13 out of which are world firsts. These included the 800-volt electrical architecture, two-speed transmission on the rear axle, high recuperative power of up to 265 kW and a low coefficient of drag which starts at as low as 0.22. Thanks to a robust electrical system, the Taycan can replenish its battery much quicker than any of its rivals. With a maximum charging power of 270 kW, the car can get 100km range in just over five minutes via the recommended DC feed. As per Porsche, the jump from 5 to 80 per cent charge takes only 22.5 minutes.
Presently, the Taycan is available in three versions – 4S, Turbo and Turbo S. Naturally, everything from performance to features depends on what sort of variant one takes. The car is already on sale in several EV-friendly markets around the globe. India too will get it.
