The latest to join the bandwagon of players with BS6-compliant products is Mahindra. For now, it has launched just one model that meets the stricter emission norms – the Mahindra XUV300. Only the petrol-powered variants are BS6 ready. Their prices start at Rs 8.30 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 11.84 lakh (ex-showroom India). Compared to the BSIV-compliant variants, the upgraded ones cost Rs 20,000 more. Apart from the powertrain, there are no other changes to report.

With this upgrade, the Mahindra XUV300 becomes the first subcompact (sub-4 metre) SUV to gain the BS6 badge. The 1.2-litre petrol engine pumps out 109bhp/200Nm, and the only transmission option with it is a 6-speed manual. Diesel fans will have to settle with an engine which is still BSIV ready. The 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder motor that produces 115bhp/300Nm is available with both a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed AMT (Automated Manual Transmission). Mahindra is expected to introduce the upgraded (BS6) diesel engine in the first half of next year.

Fun fact: Both of Mahindra XUV300’s engines remain the torquiest in the sub-4 metre space. If that doesn’t float your boat, there are a few features that only the XUV300 gets amongst its peers. That list includes dual-zone climate control, 17-inch alloy wheels, seven airbags, heated ORVMs and front parking sensors. Gizmos like type-pressure monitoring system, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, auto-dimming IRVM, rain-sensing wipers, seatbelt reminder for the second row, all four disc brakes, ESP with roll-over mitigation and hill start assist are also on offer.

Apart from taking a dig at its cousin – the TUV300 – the Mahindra XUV300 locks horns with the Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Honda WR-V in India. Come April 2020, and those models will have BS6-compliant powertrains and heftier price lists.
