The Indian arm of the British carmaker Morris Garages has confirmed that its second product, the all-electric EZS, will be manufactured at its Halol facility in Gujarat. A handful of prototypes are currently being tested across different parts of the country. The SUV is slated to become Morris Garages India’s second product when it launches in December this year.

The decision to locally-assemble the EZS EV (electric vehicle) will surely keep the sticker price down to the possible minimum. However, it still won’t be low enough for the car to become eligible for an incentive from the government under the FAME II scheme. Why? You can get the answer here.

The MG EZS is a five-seater SUV that, in terms of size, is smaller than the MG Hector but more aerodynamic. The zero-emissions model is powered by an electric motor which produces 150PS of power and 350Nm of torque. It draws its juices from a 45.6kWh, lithium-ion battery pack which, as per NEDC, can give a range of 335kmph on a single charge. Speaking of which, charging times depend on the type of feed. From a standard AC socket, the EZS will take 6 hours to charge. Plugging it to a DC fast charger can replenish 80 per cent of the battery’s stack in 30 minutes.

Here’s what Rajeev Chaba, who is the president and MD at MG Motor India, said about this development in an official release:

The MG EZS, as one of the first locally produced global EVs, will mark a new chapter in environment-friendly mobility in India. We are delighted to be one of the first carmakers to enter this space in India. aim to bring accessible electric motoring to the customers in India upon its introduction by the end of this year.

When it launches in India, the MG EZS will compete directly with the Hyundai Kona EV. The latter is destined to become Hyundai’s first all-electric product for India and it will launch in July 2019.
