Here’s what you need to know before getting to today’s development. Presently, MG Motor India has ten fast chargers (50kW DC) installed at dealerships across five cities – Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. From June 1, 2020, the company started entertaining orders for its only electric vehicle (EV) – the ZS EV – from six more cities – Surat, Kochi, Jaipur, Chennai, Pune and Chandigarh.
To expand the rapid charging ecosystem, the Chinese-owned British brand has partnered with Tata Power. According to the memorandum of understanding (MoU), “Tata Power will deploy 50kW DC chargers at select MG dealership locations and offer end-to-end EV charging solutions to MG dealerships spread across India.” This tie-up will not only come in handy for new ZS EV customers but also help the company prepare for expanding the vehicle’s reach to more cities.
The chargers in question will serve all EVs compatible with CCS/CHAdeMO charging standards. There’s a reason why MG Motor India chose Tata Power as a partner for this incredibly important project of building a fast-charging ecosystem for EVs. India’s largest integrated power utility has already established over 180 EV charging points in 19 cities. They go by the name EZ Charge. Besides, this newly inked partnership will explore the possibility of second life management of EV batteries.
Before this, Tata Power also joined forces with its sister concern – Tata Motors. The Indian automaker has a couple of EVs in its portfolio and wants a broader network of charging points. One of its products is the Tigor EV which, in the current form, can travel up to 213km on a single charge. The other is the Nexon EV. That has a bigger battery and a substantially stronger electric motor. It can travel up to 312km before running out of juice.
