With Hector’s Launch in the past, MG Motor India is now gearing up to introduce its second product – the all-electric MG eZS. The five-seater SUV, which emits no local pollution at all, will launch in five cities in December this year. Before that happens, however, the carmaker wants to do some homework. What is it? To have some supporting infrastructure.
To do just that, MG Motor India has joined forces with Fortum Charge & Drive India (a subsidiary of Finland-based clean energy firm Fortum) to install India’s first 50 kW fast-charging stations. Labelled with CCS/CHAdeMO DC, they will first be installed at MG showroom in Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Bengaluru. One of them will also be installed at MG Motor India’s flagship showroom in Gurugram. The said activity will be completed by September this year. The fast chargers will be available to EV (electric vehicle) users through a mobile app after successful registration with Fortum Charge & Drive India.
The MG eZS boasts an electric motor that puts out 150PS/350Nm. It gets the juices from a 45.6kWh, lithium-ion battery pack which can give a travel range of 335km (as per NEDC). The aforementioned chargers should help the MG eZS’ battery juice up quickly. The company says that using a DC fast charger, the EV’s battery can charge from zero to 80 per cent in 30 minutes. Feeding the battery pack from a standard AC socket will take six hours to achieve 100 per cent charge.
As we are perfectly aware, the EV scene in India’s passenger vehicle segment is small. The MG eZS, however, will not have the market to itself. When it launches, it will compete with the Hyundai Kona EV, which is launching in India next week. Both EVs will be locally put together.
