Saar: Essentially, it is the shorter version of the A-Class L sedan that broke cover during the 2018 Beijing Motor Show.
Yet another teaser! The carmakers surely know how to press the right buttons to get us intrigued. This time around it is the three-pointed star from Germany, which is normally known as Mercedes-Benz. The Stuttgart-based carmaker has officially started the teaser campaign of the A-Class sedan. If you think you’ve already seen the complete thing, then you might be mistaking it with the A-Class L iteration which broke cover nearly three months ago during the 2018 Beijing Motor Show. However, it is safe to say that in terms of looks, at least, the A-Class sedan will be essentially the same as the one showcased in China, albeit shorter in length.
In the first teaser, Mercedes-Benz is bragging about the low coefficient of drag that the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan has achieved. The magic number is 0.22. That makes the new A-Class sedan one of the slipperiest cars, aerodynamically, ever made. In fact, the new A-Class notchback is the world record holder. Biggest positive with an aerodynamic shape? Low fuel consumption. At least, comparatively.
So, what has Mercedes-Benz done to make the new A-Class sedan a world record holder? The front and rear wheel spoilers were tweaked to the last millimetre to route air around the wheels as efficiently as possible. Additionally, the rims and tyres were also designed to ensure the car cuts through the air with the minimum possible drag. The company has also installed extensive sealing, around the headlamp surroundings for instance, and almost complete panelling for the sedan’s underbody. For select markets, the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan will be offered with a part shutter system behind the radiator grille, which minimises the airflow through the engine bay.
The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan was tested and fine-tuned in the wind tunnel in Sindelfingen, Germany. The car will go on sale at the end of 2018. Needless to say, it will share almost everything, including the platform, with the A-Class hatchback. As for the production, Mercedes-Benz will manufacture the A-Class sedan in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and Rastatt, Germany. Unlike the A-Class L sedan, which Mercedes-Benz will sell exclusively in China, the A-Class sedan will be sold to other markets around the world. India is unlikely to get the A-Class sedan. We will be getting the new CLA instead.
