The Mercedes-AMG GT range is unfathomable. To a layman, at least! You see there’s the standard GT in Coupé and Roadster form and you’ve got the same two derivatives of the GT S and GT C. Then there is the GT Four-Door Coupé which manages to differentiate itself with a more practical layout. And then you have the GT R Coupé. It debuted almost three years ago and we waited for Mercedes-Benz to follow the same game plan and introduce a convertible iteration of it.

Well, that time has finally come. Say hello to the Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster. Just to make things exciting for this one, the folks from Affalterbach have played the limited-run card. So, the newest GT model will have a restricted production which will end after 750 units. That’s it! Regular earthlings will get to see the drop-top two-seater in flesh for the first time at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, which opens its gates tomorrow.

Just as the Coupé, the GT R Roadster gets its firepower from a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine. It produces 585PS of power and 700Nm of torque, all of which is fed to the wheels via a 7-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. There’s also a resemblance in performance figures. While the sprint from nought to 100kmph takes 3.6 seconds in both GT R iterations, the Roadster’s top speed at 317kmph is about 2kmph shy of its Coupé sibling. With the complications to keep the overall package as rigid as possible, the convertible GT R has some strengthening stuff in its kit which makes it slightly heavier than the fixed-top GT R.

Of course, the real party piece with the Roadster is its ability to fold its soft-top away and offer limitless headroom. Brace yourselves, here comes the really dry part of the article. The soft-top is made of three-layered fabric and is held together by a structure made out of magnesium, steel and aluminium. Within the whole arrangement is an acoustic mat which helps reduce noise. Apart from that, the Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster introduces a new paint for the body – Graphite Grey Magno in matt finish. That takes the number of colour shades available to 14. And for those who like to drape their belongings in carbon fibre inside and out, there are two pre-defined packages to choose from.

To keep things stable at high speeds or through corners, the Mercedes-AMG comes with features like an electronically controlled limited-slip differential on the rear axle, an AMG-spec sports suspension with Adaptive Damping System and rear-wheel-steering. At speed of up to 100kmph, the last of the aforementioned trio helps turn the rear wheels in the opposite direction of the front wheels. Beyond 100kmph, the rear wheels turn in the same direction ensuring a more planted driving experience.

Pricing hasn’t surfaced yet but as you’d agree, the Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster will be a rare car to be seen on the run. What’s more, Mercedes-Benz isn’t done confusing the layman just yet. We’ll soon be hearing from the Germans about how AMG plans to make the GT more hardcore under the Black Series project.
