Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ Becomes Nürburgring Lap Record Holder
Saar: It lapped the North Loop of the legendary race track in 7 minutes and 25.41 seconds and became the world’s fastest production four-seater.
The Nürburging-“Nordschleife” (North Loop) is one the most fearsome race tracks in the world. It is widely regarded as the toughest test any car can face. So, clocking the quickest time around it is what certain carmakers aim for, especially with their performance-oriented mean machines. The latest entrant in the lap records list is the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+. It went around the North Loop of the legendary race track in 7 minutes and 25.41 seconds. With that lap, it has earned the bragging rights of being the world’s fastest production four-seater car. Here’s the video:
At the wheel of the four-seater coupé was Demian Schaffert, who is the development engineer, from the AMG skunkworks. The car is powered by a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo, V8 engine that produces 639PS of power and 900Nm of torque. The power-plant comes mated to an AMG-spec 9-speed automatic transmission that routes the oomph to the road via Mercedes’ 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. The car’s agility is hiked by gizmos like active rear axle steering and electronically controlled rear axle differential lock. For the lap record, the optionally available Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tyres were used.
With those performance figures, it isn’t a surprise that the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ topped the chart. Lap records at the ‘ring, which is also known as the “Green Hell”, are bifurcated in separate segments. And those segments are really specific. For instance, the Skoda Kodiaq RS is the fastest production seven-seat SUV around the Nürburging. However, the all-time lap record holder for production cars around the same stretch is the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. It managed to dethrone the Porsche 911 GT2 RS by clocking a time of 6 minutes and 44.97 seconds. That was 2.33 seconds quicker than the Porsche.
