India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, has initiated a voluntary recall for three popular models – Ciaz, Ertiga and XL6. A total of 63,493 units, manufactured between January 1, 2019, and November 21, 2019, are part of the campaign. The 1.5-litre petrol engine, which also has a mild-hybrid system, powers all those units. The company wants to inspect for a possible issue with the Motor Generator Unit (MGU). There could be a manufacturing defect, reports Maruti Suzuki.

Starting today, all authorised Maruti Suzuki dealers across the country will begin contacting owners of the suspected vehicles. Maruti Suzuki says that vehicles which do not need any part replacement will be released immediately after inspection. And those identified with a fault will be retained until the new part gets installed. It is presently unclear how long Maruti Suzuki will take to fix the affected units. As you’d expect, the entire process of inspecting the car and replacing the faulty part (if required) will be carried out at no cost to the customer.

The engine in question debuted with the Ciaz facelift, which went on sale in August last year. It produces 103bhp/138Nm, and thanks to the mild-hybrid system, it is quite economical as well. In November 2018, Maruti Suzuki introduced the new Ertiga MPV with the same engine as an option. The XL6, which received a price list in August this year, launched as a petrol-only model. Most probability all XL6 units will require part replacement(s) under this recall.

Soon after the XL6 began its Indian innings, Maruti Suzuki issued a recall for over 40,000 WagonR units. That was the second recall that the company voluntarily triggered in 2019. The first one was back in February, which concerned 3,757 units of the Baleno.
