Maruti Suzuki is on a roll this week. Apart from introducing the refreshed, BSVI-compliant Alto, India’s largest carmaker also introduced the petrol-powered Baleno which also passes the stricter emission norms. As you’d expect, the extra bit of engineering required to make the premium hatchback BSVI-compliant resulted in a hiked price list. Now, diesel and RS variants of the Baleno have also received a bump in prices. And, they are still BSIV-compliant only.
The Baleno RS now costs Rs 8.89 lakh, which is Rs 13,000 more than before. The diesel-fed Sigma, Zeta and Alpha trims, which now cost Rs 6.74 lakh, Rs 8.13 lakh and Rs 8.73 lakh, respectively, have received the same sort of bump in prices as the RS. It is the Delta trim that has received the biggest hike. At Rs 7.52 lakh, it is nearly Rs 21,000 more than before. (All prices mentioned above are ex-showroom Delhi).
Maruti Suzuki says that hiked prices are live from immediate effect. Compared to the refreshed Baleno, which was launched in January this year, the change in prices has brought no changes to the diesel and RS variants. The diesel range is still powered by the Fiat-sourced, 1.3-litre, turbo-diesel engine which is good for 75PS/190Nm. The RS variant, on the other hand, houses a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, turbo-petrol mill that produces 102PS/150Nm. Both engines are available only with a 5-speed manual transmission, which feeds the power to the front wheels only.
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno is the segment leader. Ever since it was first launched in 2015, it has clocked more than 5.5 lakh sales for its maker. Out of that lot, Maruti Suzuki sold more than 2 lakh units in the last fiscal alone. The petrol-powered Baleno became the first product from a mass-market player to get a BSVI-compliant engine. No other car in its segment has yet received such an upgrade. Speaking of which, the Baleno competes with the Honda Jazz, Hyundai Elite i20 and the Volkswagen Polo in India.
