Do you own the new Mahindra Thar? Is it a diesel variant? If yes is the answer to those questions, then you need to pay attention. Mahindra has initiated a voluntary recall for 1,577 units of diesel-fed Thar, manufactured between September 7 and December 25, 2020. The homegrown automaker suspects a potential problem with the camshaft of the engine.
It goes on to mention that a machine-setting error at the supplier’s facility may have affected camshafts in some diesel engines. That too happened on specific dates. As is the case which vehicle recalls, the inspection and replacement/rectification (if necessary) will be carried out at no cost to the customers. Mahindra will individually contact the owners of potentially affected vehicles and fix an appointment.
The engine in question is a 2.2-litre unit that pumps out 130bhp/300Nm and is available with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Both those gearboxes are also on offer with the other powerplant – the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol with 150bhp/320Nm (300Nm with MT). All variants come with a proper four-wheel-drive system, mechanical locking differential and tow hitch protection.
When Mahindra launched the all-new Thar back in October 2020, the SUV was available in three trim levels – AX, AX (O) and LX. Now, however, only the latter two are on offer. In AX (O) form, the Thar packs stuff like LED taillamps, 16-inch wheels, vinyl upholstery, height-adjustable driver’s seat, rear parking sensors, dual airbags and a roll cage. The range-topping LX trim offers 18-inch alloy wheels, fabric upholstery, cruise control, a multifunction steering wheel, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, tyre pressure monitoring system and ESP with Roll-Over Mitigation.
The range starts at Rs 12.1 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 14.15 lakh (ex-showroom). Presently, the Thar’s waiting period stretches up to multiple months. That’s how well India has received it. How do you like it?
