To broaden the Scorpio’s appeal, Mahindra has introduced a new entry-level variant called the S3+. At Rs 11.99 lakh, it costs approximately Rs 69,000 less than the next-in-line derivative – the S5 (when considered ex-showroom Delhi prices). The question – is the price difference justifiable? Let’s answer that objectively.

When you compare the variants mentioned above in terms of features, there’s very little differentiate. The S3+ does miss out on body-coloured bumpers, auto-door lock, a footstep and fabric upholstery. The rest of the package, which includes the choice between 7- and 9-seat configurations, ABS and dual airbags, is identical in both those forms. Do those add up to the price difference? Surely not!

The main differentiating factor is the performance department. Although both use the same 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine, the S3+ makes do with 119bhp/280Nm while the S5 now gets the punchier 137bhp/319Nm of tune. Also, the former has a 5-speed manual gearbox, whereas the latter comes with a 6-speed manual. Now, those differences definitely justify why the S5 costs that much more than the S3+ derivative.

When Mahindra upgraded the Scorpio to meet the stricter BS6 (Bharat Stage 6) norms last year, it took away the option of the hugely impressive four-wheel-drive system. That’s still the case. But, it could change when the homegrown automaker introduces the much-anticipated all-new Scorpio. Other inclusions on the cards include the options of a petrol engine and an automatic transmission. In all probability, the new Scorpio will borrow the powertrains from the Thar.

In India, the Mahindra Scorpio competes with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the Nissan Kicks. Except for the Kicks, the other two are available in diesel guises as well. Based on how competitive Mahindra can get, the new Scorpio will also give the MG Hector and the Tata Harrier a run for their money.
