Saar: With prices starting from Rs 26.95 lakh, the rebadged SsangYong Rexton comes in two trims, covering a single engine-transmission combination.
In what can be described as one of the grandest launch events in the recent past, Mahindra, with its Alturas G4, entered an SUV category which tries to mix on-road comfort with off-road potency, without compromising on luxury. The Mahindra Alturas G4, in other words, lands in a world dominated by the Toyota Fortuner and has more-than-capable players such as the Ford Endeavour and the Isuzu MU-X.
With prices starting at Rs 26.95 lakh and going up to Rs 29.95 lakh (both prices are ex-showroom Delhi), the Mahindra Alturas G4 undercuts the Ford and the Toyota but not the Isuzu. But this isn’t a specification or price comparison. The aim of this particular piece is to detail what all the Alturas G4 offers in each of its two trims. Before we get to that, let’s get the vitals out of the way.
Both trims of the Mahindra Alturas G4 are powered by a BS VI-compliant, 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that produces 181PS of power and 420Nm of torque. Coupled to the mill is a 7-speed automatic transmission which is sourced from Mercedes-Benz. While the entry-level trim comes with two-wheel-drive, the range-topping one gets a four-wheel-drive system with a low-range gearbox. The Alturas G4 is available in five colours – Regal Blue, Dsat Silver, Lakeside Brown, Pearl White and Napoli Black.
Right then! Time to get cracking on the trim-wise list of features. Our usual set of rules apply here. We’ll be listing on those features which can potentially act as deal makers or breakers.
Trim – 4×2 AT
Unlike other Mahindra cars, which usually have their names ending with ‘Os’ and a specific nomenclature for trims, the Alturas G4 is less confusing. Let’s see what are the main set of features that it offers in its base trim:
- 18-inch alloy wheels
- LED DRLs and Taillamps
- Projector headlamps
- LED illuminated rear licence plate
- Door handle LED lamps for front doors
- 8-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat
- Black & Grey Nappa leather interior trim
- Ventilated seats
- Dual-zone climate control
- AC vents for all three rows
- Heated OVRMs with integrated LED indicators
- Tyre pressure monitoring system
- Start/Stop button
- 5-inch Mono-colour MID
- 0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Electronic power brake with auto-hold function
- Cruise control
- Windshield de-icer function
- Dual airbags
- ABS with EBD
- Traction control system
- Hill descent control and start assist
- Electronic stability program
- ISOFIX anchorages
As you can see, the list is quite long and we could go on with more gizmos. The thing is, at Rs 26.95 lakh, the Mahindra Alturas G4 brings a lot to the party. Compared to its competition, it isn’t difficult to recommend either. But there are a few features it misses out on. Those, predictably, can be found with the range-topper.
Trim – 4×4 AT
Here’s what the Mahindra Alturas G4 gets you in its fully-loaded trim, over and above its base version:
- HID headlamps
- LED fog lamps with cornering lamps
- Tan & Black Nappa leather interior trim
- Easy access mode
- Ambient lighting
- Memory function for driver’s seat and OVRMs
- Illuminated door sills
- OVRMs with auto-tilt function (when in reverse gear)
- Automatic wipers and headlamps
- 0-inch coloured MID
- 3D around view camera
- Powered tailgate
- 9 airbags
- Four-wheel-drive with a low-range gearbox
- Sunroof with anti-pinch
The price difference between this and the entry-level trim is exactly Rs 3 lakh. Is it justified? We believe yes. Not only does it get the added safety of 9 airbags and added the convenience of automatic wipers and headlamps but also a promising four-wheel-drive system which will come in handy with the going gets rough.
So, there you have it. Possibly one of the shortest ‘trims explained’ articles we’ve delivered till date. Apart from the abovementioned rivals, the Mahindra Alturas G4 also falls in the same sort of price bracket as the Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander, Volkswagen Tiguan and the Skoda Kodiaq. The real question is obvious – is the Alturas G4 tempting enough for you to ditch the established players in the Rs 30 lakh price segment? Do let us know what you think in the comments below.
