Saar: Mahindra’s new flagship passenger vehicle is available in two variants and both come with the same engine-transmission combination.
Mahindra has officially entered a territory that it has never explored before. At least, not with its own name! Meet the Mahindra Alturas G4. A reworked and rebadged iteration of the car that in international markets is known as the SsangYong Rexton. The Alturas G4 is available in two variants – 2WD AT and 4WD AT. While the former is priced at Rs 26.95 lakh, the latter wears a price tag of Rs 29.95 lakh (both prices are ex-showroom Delhi).
The Alturas G4 brushes the XUV500 aside to take the flagship passenger vehicle title from Mahindra. And it does so proudly. Under the hood of the Mahindra Alturas G4 is a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine that puts out 181PS/420Nm. The oomph is fed to the wheels via a 7-speed automatic transmission which is sourced from Mercedes-Benz. With the range-topping variant, you get a four-wheel-drive system, which comes with a low-range gearbox. The real kicker – the engine is BS VI-compliant.
As you’d expect, the Mahindra Alturas G4 comes jam-packed with features. The list includes 9 airbags, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, ventilated seats, powered tailgate, dedicated AC vents for all three rows and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There a couple of gizmos which will make the Alturas G4 standout. The first one is a 360-degree view camera which will come in handy in tight parking spaces. And the second one is called easy access. Open the driver’s side door and the electrically adjustable seat automatically slides back to make the ingress/egress easier. Shut it and the seat slides back to the original position. Mahindra will offer the Alturas G4 in five colours – New Pearl White, Napoli Black, Lakeside Brown, Dsat Silver and Regal Blue.
The Mahindra Alturas G4 has all the right ingredients to make the competition sweat. Speaking of which, the newbie lands a reasonably-priced punch in the segment currently dominated by the Toyota Fortuner and has potent offerings such as the Ford Endeavour and the Isuzu MU-X. SUVs like the Mitsubishi Outlander, Skoda Kodiaq, Honda CR-V and the Volkswagen Tiguan also fall in the same sort of price range.
