In June last year, we saw the rebirth of the BMW 8 Series in a Coupé form. It has already gone on sale in a number of international markets in two variants – the M40d and the M850i. In the spring of 2019, BMW will launch a limited-run version of the latter variant. It is called the BMW M850i xDrive Coupé First Edition. Although that name is a mouthful, only 400 examples of it will ever exist which means it will guarantee uncommonness. Its time in BMW’s Dingolfing production plant will last for about three months – from April to June 2019.
The list of design quirks that earn it the First Edition nameplate includes a new exterior paint which BMW tags as Frozen Barcelona Blue. The limited-run model will become the first BMW to flaunt this metallic shade. To accompany it, the exterior of the 8 Series Coupé First Edition also features glossy-black window surrounds, kidney grille and slats, air breather applications and tailpipe. To top it all, BMW will also install Jet Black 20-inch M light-alloy wheels with a Y-spoke design. The list of options for the exterior includes an M carbon roof and an M Carbon exterior package.
Predictably, the interiors of the First Edition complement the exterior styling. The full leather trim has been finished in the colour combination of Ivory White and Night Blue. The two-door Coupé also gets a leather-wrapped M steering wheel and Alcantara roof liner, both finished in the Night Blue colour. The centre console, which has been topped with Piano Black inserts, flaunts the lettering – “First Edition 1/400”. Obviously, the count will go on and end at 400/400. Other features include a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, and Crafted Clarity glass applications on the start/stop button, the iDrive controller, the volume control and the illuminated gearshift lever.
Under the bonnet is a 4.4-litre, twin-turbo, V8 that puts out 530PS/750Nm. The oomph is harnessed by 8-speed automatic transmission and is fed to the wheels via BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW claims that with this setup, the 8 Series Coupé can hit 100kmph from a standstill in 3.7 seconds and reach an electronically-limited top speed of 250kmph.
So, there you have it. If you yearn to have the BMW 8 Series, why not put your name down to get a rare iteration of it? BMW will also be bringing the 8 Series to India later this year. We will also be getting the new Z4, the X7 and the all-new 3 Series by the end of 2019.
