After introducing a locally-assembled version of the Range Rover Velar and a new 2.0-litre petrol engine in the Range Rover Sport’s portfolio, Land Rover India is now offering a new diesel engine with the Discovery. Priced from Rs 75.18 lakh (ex-showroom India), it can be had in S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury trim levels. The said engine is the first of its kind in Jaguar Land Rover’s portfolio as it comes with series sequential turbo technology to deliver some extra punch.

The new engine has a 2.0-litre displacement and puts out 240PS of peak power and 500Nm of maximum torque. The oomph is transferred to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Land Rover claims a 0-100kmph time of 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 207kmph. Those figures might not look impressive but for an SUV that measures 12mm short of 5 metres and weighs over 2.1 tonnes unladen, they seem pretty good.

As mentioned above, the new engine is available across four trim levels. That means the standard list of features can include electronic air suspension, an electric sunroof, 20-inch, 10 split-spoke alloy wheels, 14-way electrically adjustable front seats with memory function, adaptive cruise control, 360-degree parking aid, configurable interior mood lighting, a 14-speaker, 825-watt Meridian Sound system and a gesture tailgate. On the safety front, the SUV comes with hill descent control with off-road ABS, dynamic stability control, adaptive cruise control with queue assist, driver condition monitor, lane keep and departure warning and a rear-view camera.

Obviously, there are a bunch of optional extras available too and most of them can be had with any trim level. With the introduction of the new diesel engine, the Land Rover Discovery is now more affordable in India. Its list of rivals includes the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Volvo XC90 and the BMW X5.
