Are you in the market to purchase a compact sedan with a posh logo? And, are you the sort of person who, for whatever reason, doesn’t like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the new BMW 3 Series and the mildly updated Audi A4? Well, here’s some good news for you. The refreshed Jaguar XE, which broke cover in February this year, is arriving in India on December 4, 2019. It will become the first product from the British carmaker to comply with BS6 (Bharat Stage 6) levels of emission norms.

In its refreshed avatar, the baby Jag looks meaner. And that’s what makes it a bit different o the Germans. The front and rear fascias feature significant design changes, including slimmer and reprofiled headlamps and taillamps. The story indoors is on the subtle side. For example, more panels boast soft-touch finishes, both in the front and the rear sections. The car also features a new multifunction steering wheel, behind which is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Apart from that, the XE facelift also gets Jaguar’s Touch Pro Duo system, the control centre for which is a 10-inch infotainment screen.

The list of features does not end there. JLR India will ensure that the XE facelift derived for India at least matches the competition if not outshines them. The standard package is expected to include 18-inch alloy wheels, all-LED headlamps and taillamps, powered leather seats, a rear-view camera, front and rear parking aids, a bunch of airbags and lane-keep assist.

In all likelihood, the revamped XE will have two engine options – a petrol and diesel each. Both will have a displacement of 2.0 litres and will be turbocharged. Where the petrol motor will produce 247bhp/365Nm, the diesel will offer 177bhp/430Nm. An 8-speed automatic unit will handle transmission duties for both the power-plants. As per Jaguar, the petrol-fed XE can hit 100kmph from nothing in 6.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 250kmph. With the diesel engine, those figures, in the same order, are 8.1 seconds and 225kmph.

As you’d expect, the XE’s features and the performance numbers are more or less similar to its rivals from Germany. Where Jaguar can play its joker is in the pricing department. But that will not be easy as all of XE’s competitors are already BS6 ready. The outgoing XE starts at Rs 40.61 lakh and goes up to Rs 47 lakh, whereas the 3 Series costs between Rs 41.4 lakh and Rs 47.9 lakh, and the C-Class between Rs 40.1 lakh and Rs 49.75 lakh. As for the Audi A4, which is petrol only, prices start at Rs 42 lakh and go up to Rs 45.55 lakh.
