Saar: Underpinned by the same platform, albeit an updated version, that does duty in the Renault Captur, the India-spec Nissan Kicks will be bigger than its internationally available sibling.
Last month, Nissan India released the set first of official sketches of the India-bound Kicks. Now, the company has unveiled the India-spec Kicks and it looks quite similar to what the Kicks is in international markets like the Middle East and Europe. But there’s more than what meets the eye. Specifically, a keen and trained eye! Let’s make it clear from the get going that Nissan hasn’t revealed any images for the interior. For that, we’ll have to wait a bit longer.
On the outside, the India-spec Nissan Kicks gets a redesigned front bumper, faux air inlets which accompany the front fog lamps, an aluminium skid plate, a honeycomb mesh design for the grille and a tweaked rear bumper. Unsurprisingly, there’s generous use of chrome too covering the applique on the upper lip of the rear number plate area and the ‘V-motion’ chrome band at the front.
Other noteworthy design cues include strong-shoulder lines, well-defined wheel arches, blacked-out pillars, roof rails, 17-inch alloy wheels and a ‘floating roof’ which in these official pictures is finished in a striking orange shade. In terms of dimensions, the India-spec Nissan Kicks measures 4,384mm in length, 1,813mm in width and 1,656mm in height. Its wheelbase and ground clearance are clocked at 2,673mm and 210mm respectively.
Thanks to the increased dimensions, the India-spec Nissan Kicks will be roomier on the inside. As far as the design and layout of the cabin are concerned, they are likely to remain almost exactly the same as the international versions. That said, expect Nissan to offer features like an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, cruise control and leatherette upholstery.
Underneath, the India-spec Nissan Kicks will be underpinned by an updated version of the platform that does duty in the Renault Captur and the Nissan Terrano. This leads us to believe that the Kicks will get the same set of engine-transmission options like its siblings, albeit in slightly different tunes. That means the Kicks will be powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine and a 1.5-litre petrol. While the former is expected to come with a 6-speed manual transmission, the latter is expected to get a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Nissan Kicks could also borrow the AMT and CVT units from the diesel and petrol versions of the Renault Duster.
The Nissan Kicks will go on sale in India early next year. Up until then, expect Nissan to slowly unveil the currently unknown aspects of its flagship SUV. Once launched, it will land a stronger punch in the segment which is currently ruled by the Hyundai Creta.
