We’ve just entered October, and there’s been a lot of activity already. The latest to join the headlines is this – the Mini Convertible Sidewalk Edition. Yes, that is a curious nameplate. And yes, it costs Rs 44.9 lakh, before taxes. But, what it offers is something no other Mini product presently does in India – exclusivity. Only fifteen units are up for grabs. You can book one online via Mini India’s official website.

First things first – the Mini Convertible Sidewalk Edition lands in India via the CBU (Completely Built Unit) route. That explains the inflated price tag. Compared to the standard Convertible, the Sidewalk Edition costs Rs 6 lakh more. The limited-edition derivative comes finished in an exclusive colour called Deep Laguna Blue. Accompanying it a soft-top electric roof flaunting a geometric pattern. By the way, the retractable top can do its thing in 20 seconds.

Other bespoke elements include dual-tone, 17-inch light-alloy wheels with Scissor Spoke design, Sidewalk side scuttles, door sill finishers in brushed aluminium and stripes on the bonnet. Indoors, the car packs Sidewalk leather seats in Anthracite with braided piping in Dark Petrol and accent seams in Energetic Yellow. Several other trim pieces, including those on the doors and the Sidewalk-marked multifunction steering wheel, boast the Petrol finish.

Powering the Mini Convertible Sidewalk Edition is a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. It pumps out 189bhp/280Nm, precisely the same as the standard Convertible model. That means the sprint from nothing to 100kmph takes 7.1 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 230kmph. Handling transmission duties is a 7-speed double-clutch unit, which can also be operated using paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

As far as features go, the limited-run model packs stuff like Mini Driving Modes, automatic headlamps and wipers, Park Distance Control, LED-powered lights and automatic climate control. Other features include ABS, Cornering Brake Control, Runflat Indicator, Brake Assist and Roll-Over Protection System.

So, there you have it. For the price, the Mini Convertible Sidewalk Edition is a bit too dear. However, if you want something quick, compact, exclusive, a lot of pedigree and with an electrically-retractable roof, this is the only option available in India.
