The news of four Volkswagen SUVs coming to India broke officially in January this year. The following month, at the Auto Expo, the German brand showcased all those products and opened bookings for two of them. Today, India gets the first of those products. Called the Tiguan Allspace, it carries an introductory price tag of Rs 33.12 lakh, before taxes. The company is offering the three-row SUV in one trim level and one engine-transmission combination.

To keep the price tag competitive enough, Volkswagen has brought the Tiguan Allspace with a petrol-powered heart. Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre TSI engine which produces 188bhp/320Nm. A 7-speed DSG harnesses all that oomph and feeds it to an all-wheel-drive system. Other noteworthy numbers include a boot space ranging between 340 litres and 1,274 litres, 18-inch alloys and 60-litre fuel tank.

If you think all that is impressive, wait until you acquaint to the list of features. It includes a panoramic sunroof, LED-powered DRLs and headlamps, LED ambient lighting, hands-free boot opening, heated front seats, auto headlamps and wipers and memory function for ORVMs. Is all that still a bit poor for your taste? Well, the list also ropes-in gizmos like a digital instrument cluster, paddle shifters, cruise control with speed limiter, three-zone climate control, electrically-adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, keyless entry and drive system, auto-dimming IRVM and touchscreen infotainment system mated to an 8-speaker sound system.

The Tiguan Allspace’s safety net is quite extensive too. In addition to a rear-view camera, heated ORVMs, front and rear fog lamps, tyre pressure monitoring system and hill descent control, the SUV also packs ISOFIX anchorages for child booster seats, seven airbags, cornering lights, auto-hold function and front and rear parking sensors.

For the price, the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is hugely enticing. And let’s not forget, it comes to India via the CBU (Completely Built Unit) route. Apart from rivalling its step-sibling, the Skoda Kodiaq, the seven-seat Volkswagen will also lock horns with the Mitsubishi Outlander, Ford Endeavour and the Toyota Fortuner. Your pick of the lot would be?
