India finally gets the first BS6-compliant (Bharat Stage 6) compact sedan – the Honda City. The company has launched an upgraded range of the car which, alongside gaining a BS6 badge, has become dearer as well. As of now, only the petrol-powered variants comply with the stricter emission norms. The diesel-fed derivatives, on the other hand, will be tweaked to do the same by April 2020. Here’s how the new price list stands:

Depending on the BS6-ready variant chosen, you’d pay up to Rs 15,000 more than before. What’s also worth noting is that prices of three out of the four diesel-powered variants have gone up by Rs 5,000. Some might think that the increased rates will not help the City’s sales in India. However, the car becomes the first amongst its peers to meet the BS6 norms, which are slightly stricter than Euro 6 standards.

The City was never the most affordable sedan in its segment. And with the new price list, it becomes the most expensive. That said, other models in the category will face the same fate when their powertrains are either upgraded to be future-ready or replaced with ones that already are. In all likelihood, it will be the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz to become the next BS6-compliant model in the compact sedan space. Other models like the Toyota Yaris and the Hyundai Verna will follow suit. As for the Volkswagen Vento and the Skoda Rapid, their options list will soon be trimmed down to just petrol-powered, BS6-ready variants.

From Honda’s portfolio, models like the BR-V, Brio and the Jazz are unlikely to enter the BS6 era. While production for the former two halted long back, the premium hatchback has never met the anticipated sales in India because of its steep price list. Honda won’t even bother bringing the all-new Jazz, which broke cover earlier this year, to India.
