Soon after Tata Motors launched the new Tigor EV, Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) released the crash-test report of the same car. It bagged four-star safety ratings for both adult and child occupants. That makes the new Tigor EV safer to travel in than its conventionally-powered twin. The Tigor EV became the first-ever electric vehicle crash-tested by Global NCAP. Here, check out the crash-test video:

The car was assessed in its basic safety specification. The list of safety features included dual airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-channel ABS and seatbelt reminders. However, if it were equipped with Electronic Stability Control, side-impact protection, ISOFIX anchorages and three-point seatbelts for all seating positions, the result would have been even more impressive.

Following the same regime, as it does with all other cars, Global NCAP crash-tested the Tigor EV at 64kmph. The bodyshell was rated unstable, and so was the footwell area. That said, the EV offered mostly good or adequate protection to both adult occupants. The knee area for both the driver and front passenger received marginal protection.

The child occupants, a 3-year-old and a 1.5-year-old, were seated in rearward-facing positions with adult seatbelts on. Upon impact, there wasn’t an excessive forward movement, resulting in good protection for the head and chest. The study also states that the CRSs (Child Restraint Systems) did not show incompatibility.

Tata Motors has never shied away when it comes to crash-testing mass-market products. Apart from the Tigor siblings, even the Tiago bagged a four-star safety rating from Global NCAP. As for the Altroz and the Nexon, they’ve recorded five stars from the same independent body, making them amongst the safest made-in- and made-for-India cars money can buy. Later this year, Tata Motors will launch its first-ever micro SUV – the Punch. Built on the same platform as the Altroz, expect the newcomer to outperform all its rivals on safety, at least.
