Bought a Figo, Aspire, Freestyle or EcoSport in the past year or so? Is it a diesel and complies with the stringent BS6 (Bharat Stage 6) norms? If your answer to both of those questions is yes, then you must pay attention. Ford India has triggered a voluntary recall for 31,818 units manufactured between January 1, 2020, and June 1, 2021. The count comprises diesel-powered versions of all three models mentioned above.

What’s the issue? The carmaker says that the vehicles might emit higher emissions from the exhaust outlet after a certain period. This came to light during an in-service examination as per BS6 test procedures. For the record, a random dip-check of emissions from customer-owned cars has been made mandatory by the Government of India. This is applicable for all vehicles sold after April 1, 2020. That’s the day when India migrated from BSIV to BS6 emission standards. The rule is part of the amended Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989, under the Automotive Industry Standard-137 (Part 3).

The same 1.5-litre diesel engine powers all four models. Ford has clarified that there are no safety concerns concerning vehicle function or drivability. However, if your car meets the criterion, it is highly recommended to get it rectified at the earliest. That will positively contribute to our air pollution levels and make it easier for the car to pass the next pollution check. Of course, the entire process of inspection and rectification (if required) will come at no cost to the customer.

Not sure how to confirm whether your Ford is part of this service campaign? One of the ways to check is by using the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and entering that on Ford India’s official website. Another is to contact the service centre directly and share the required details. You can find the VIN on the Registration Certificate and the car’s invoice.
