Arguably, the current period is the best one to purchase a new car in India. With the final date for the mandatory transition from BSIV to BS6 (Bharat Stage 6) fast approaching, every carmaker is busy rolling out tasty discounts on their products to clear the inventory. Skoda Auto India is one of them. Until the end of the current month, it has devised a discounted price list for select variants of some models. And here’s that list:

If you still haven’t noticed, all those variants in the table above have one thing in common – they are all diesel-powered. For the Rapid (including the Monte Carlo), the savings are between Rs 1.07 lakh and Rs 1.6 lakh. Depending on which one you opt, a discount of at least 9 per cent and at most 12 per cent is up for grabs. For the record, the 1.5-litre diesel is good for 109bhp/250Nm and comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG.

Those who’ve always wanted to land a diesel-fed Superb, they can get a fully-loaded L&K trim with a massive discount of Rs 3.5 lakh. With that injected, the asking price comes under Rs 30 lakh (taxes extra). For the Style trim, Skoda is offering a 6 per cent discount. That might seem the smallest in the table above. However, the reduced price brings the difference between this Superb variant and the fully-loaded L&K diesel Octavia to just Rs 2.5 lakh.

Then we have the Kodiaq. With a discount of Rs 2.37 lakh, the Style TDI AT variant costs Rs 1 lakh less than the sole derivative of the Kodiaq Scout. Powering them is the same 2.0-litre diesel engine that also does duty in the Superb. But where the sedan has 174bhp/350Nm on tap, both the SUVs make do with 148bhp/340Nm. The seven-seaters might not have power on their side, but they both get 7-speed DSG (Superb gets a 6-speed DSG), and they have a four-wheel-drive system.

We still have a few months before the ban on the sale of BSIV-compliant models comes into effect. Before that happens, here’s something you must consider. Discounts such as these will be stock dependant. Moreover, prices for all BS6-ready models will be considerably higher than what they cost right now. That especially holds for diesel-powered models because the cost of upgrading a diesel powertrain to meet the stricter emission norms is more than what it is for a petrol-fed one. Put those facts together, and you can effectively save a lot more.
