The Defender began its innings in India with a 2.0-litre petrol engine. Then, Land Rover decided to offer the SUV in a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) form. Bookings for that opened only in December last year. Now, without making a fuss about it, the British brand has expanded the Defender’s portfolio by adding two new engine options. One is petrol while the other is diesel, but both are 3.0-litre units. And like others, the new powerplants are available in three-door (90) and five-door (110) forms. Here’s the complete price list:

Both new motors come coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. In the D300 form, the Land Rover Defender comes with a turbocharged 3.0-litre diesel engine that pumps out 296bhp/650Nm. That’s enough for a 0-100kmph sprint time of 6.7 seconds (Defender 110 takes 7.0 seconds) and a top speed of 191kmph. Those looking for a gutsier petrol-powered Defender could opt for any of the P400 variants. They house a 3.0-litre engine with 394bhp/550Nm on tap. With that kind of oomph, the SUV can hit 100kmph from a standstill in 6.0 seconds (Defender 110 takes 6.1 seconds) and reach 191kmph flat out.

Obviously, the list of features will vary according to the trim level. Depending on which one you choose, the Defender will pack stuff like 20-inch alloy wheels, a head-up display, a 14-speaker Meridian sound system, a 10.0-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system and dual-zone climate control. Other features on offer include 360-degree parking aid, cruise control, an active electronic differential with torque vectoring, Terrain Response 2 tech, powered seats, wade sensing and a 3D surround camera.

With the new variants coming in, the price difference between the least expensive and range-topping derivatives is Rs 34.21 lakh. In India, the Land Rover Defender competes directly with the Jeep Wrangler, which, unlike the British model, is now being assembled in India. We’ll know the prices of the India-made versions next week.
