Saar: It will be offered with the same set of engine-transmission combinations as the car it is based on – the BMW X3.
Are you the sort of person who wants an SUV with a twist? Have you always liked the BMW X6 but couldn’t afford to shell out over Rs 90 lakh? Well, good news! BMW India will launch the X4 sometime next year and it is to the X3 as the X6 is to the X5. In other words, it is a smaller version of the BMW X6 and since it will be brought into India via the CKD (completely knocked down) route and assembled in Chennai, it should be priced competitively. More on that later.
We will be getting the second generation of the BMW X4, which was unveiled at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. Like the BMW X3, the X4 is underpinned by the company’s CLAR (Cluster Architecture) platform. Hence, the said duo will share almost everything in their package. The wheelbase remains identical between the two while the X4 is 44mm longer, 27mm wider and 55mm lower. Those extra numbers help carve out a slightly bigger cabin but the distinguishing feature of the X4 is that sloping roofline. That makes it look like a coupe-inspired SUV.
In the powertrain department, the BMW X4 should remain identical to the X3. That means it is likely to be offered with two tags – xDrive30i and xDrive20d. In both guises, the BMW X4 will get a 2.0-litre engine. But where the former is a petrol-fed motor and produces 252PS/350Nm, the latter is a diesel-powered mill that puts out 190PS/400Nm. Both engines will come mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s all-wheel-drive system. We can expect BMW to bring the M40i derivative of the X4 at a later stage, which will compete directly with the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe 4MATIC.
On the features front, the BMW X4 will offer the same kit as the current X3 does. So, you’ll get goodies like a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, automatic wipers and headlamps (full LED), powered tailgate, panoramic glass roof and three-zone automatic climate control.
Apart from the GLC Coupe from Mercedes-Benz, the only real rival for the BMW X4 in India will be the Range Rover Evoque. As for the price, it should slot right between the X3 and the X5. Presently, the BMW X3 is priced between Rs 49.99 – 56.90 lakh and the X5 ranges from Rs 76.90 lakh to Rs 82.90 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom India).
